Monarch Habitat Restoration Projects - Milkweed Corridor Across North America

In recent years, the monarch butterfly populations have declined. Across North America, there are projects to provide milkweed habitats to support these beautiful creatures.

Projects for Monarch Habitat Restoration and Monitoring

The Monarch Larva Monitoring Project is a scistarter project to provide training and materials necessary to conduct monitoring. A great project for kids, families, and anyone who is interested. 

Monarch Alert is a citizen-based research project based at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo with connections to other universities.

MonarchWatch is a nonprofit educational outreach program based at the University of Kansas that focuses on the monarch butterfly, its habitat, and its spectacular fall migration. It started in 1992 as an outreach program. 

In 2005, MonarchWatch started the Monarch Waystations program.

MonarchLive is a "distance learning adventure" which ran in 2008-2009. It looks like there are archives of broadcast and webcast videos from the program.

"The Monarch Joint Venture (MJV) is a partnership of federal and state agencies, non-governmental organizations, and academic programs that are working together to support and coordinate efforts to protect the monarch migration across the lower 48 United States," run out of the University of Minnesota's Department of Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation Biology.

Monarch Flyway describes itself as "the World’s largest supplier of wild-crafted, sustainably harvested milkweed products and raw materials." They include information about milkweed, and "we also sell milkweed raw materials to people who dream big and look for opportunities to grow their own dreams while benefiting the Monarch."

Their website includes a link to the Asclepias Seed Company, offering bulk seeds for planting and links to other companies offering milkweed seeds.

Journey North focuses on wildlife migration and seasonal change for K-12 students. They have a page about Monarch Habitat Projects, with links to projects in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina, and a Map of Habitat Sites.

Oregon

The Oregon Milkweed Project is a small, individual-run project in Oregon.

Pennsylvania

Lehigh Gap Nature Centre includes the Monarch and Common Milkweed in its Eastern Pennsylvania Phenology Project. Monitoring populations is an important part of knowing how they are doing.

Mexico

Global Giving provides a way to support the Mexican forest ecosystem that supports the overwintering population through the Community Conservation of Monarch Forest in Mexico.
